Eye of the Centaur was drawn out of the taped transcriptions of 30 past-life regressions under hypnosis into Barbara Hand Clow's past lives conducted with therapist, Gregory Paxson of Chicago. Clow had a specific karmic question for the book: The central karmic question for Eye of the Centaur was, "How do past-life initiations affect us in our current lifetime?" This question brought forth varied initiatic experiences in many ancient cultures.

While undergoing this regression, Clow found she could time-travel into the mind of anyone in the past. In this part of Eye of the Centaur, Clow was flying around as an angel during the early Renaissance, when she felt drawn to a strange and thoughtful person sitting by an old church, who was Nostradamous. She read his mind while he was experiencing a vision in a crystal cave by staring into the reflection of a clear pool rimmed by crystals. He was having a vision of a war between Babylon and a European king, and the Knights Templars had asked him for this information. Seeing visions through his eyes was like being a camera inside a crystal ball.
This is Ichor, an 18th Dynasty Egyptian priest. He is conducting the "weighing of the heart of the soul" ceremony for the Pharaoh Amenhotep II within his tomb at the Valley of the Kings. He is energizing a small visualization of the Pharaoh with a pyramid of light that forms from the triangle of his hands and third eye, which projects the magnetized pyramid out to the little figure.
